Hosting Terminal Server and Group Information Collection Process

Purpose

Use this guide to:

  1. Capture the hosting group color tag (shown on the right side of the menu bar in the RDP session selection screen).
  2. Capture the Terminal Server name you are currently connected to.
  3. Attach these screenshots to your EMDS case for review.

Part 1 – Capture the Hosting Group Color Tag

Step 1 – Open the RDP Session Selection Screen

  1. Connect to Remote Desktop as you normally do.
  2. When you reach the session selection screen (where you choose your desktop or application), do not open anything yet.
  3. Look at the top menu bar of this window.

The color tag is located on the right side of the menu bar.

Step 2 – Take a Screenshot of the Color Tag

  1. Make sure the session selection screen is visible and the color tag on the right side of the menu bar is clearly shown.
  2. Take a screenshot:
    • Windows:
      • Press PrtScn to capture the whole screen, or
      • Press Alt + PrtScn to capture just the active window, or
      • Press Windows + Shift + S and drag over the RDP window.
    • Mac:
      • Press Shift + Command + 4, then drag over the RDP window.
  3. Paste or save the screenshot:
    • Open Paint (or another image editor) and press Ctrl + V to paste, then save, or
    • Use your snipping/screenshot tool’s save option.
  4. Save the image with a clear name, for example:
    RDP_ColorTag_YourName.png

This screenshot must clearly show the color tag on the right side of the menu bar.

Part 2 – Capture the Terminal Server Name

Step 3 – Connect to Your Remote Desktop / Session

  1. From the session selection screen, click your usual desktop or application.
  2. Wait until your remote desktop is fully loaded.

Step 4 – Find the Terminal Server Name

Use one of the following methods from within the remote session.

Option A – From the RDP Window Title Bar

  1. On your local device, look at the very top title bar of the Remote Desktop window.
  2. If you see a name like TSRV-Prod01, RDSHOST02, etc., that is the Terminal Server name.

If this is visible and clear, you can capture it in a screenshot (see Part 3).

Option B – Using the hostname Command (Recommended)

  1. Inside the remote desktop session, open the Start menu.
  2. Type cmd and press Enter to open Command Prompt.
  3. In the Command Prompt window, type:

cmd

   hostname

  1. Press Enter.

The value returned (for example, RDSHOST02) is the Terminal Server you are connected to. Leave this window open for the screenshot.

Part 3 – Take a Screenshot Showing the Terminal Server Name

Step 5 – Capture the Terminal Server Screenshot

  1. Ensure the remote desktop is visible and that either:
    • The RDP window title bar shows the server name, or
    • The Command Prompt window shows the hostname result.
  2. Take a screenshot:
    • Windows:
      • Press PrtScn for the entire screen, or
      • Press Alt + PrtScn for the active window, or
      • Press Windows + Shift + S and drag over the RDP window.
    • Mac:
      • Press Shift + Command + 4 and drag over the RDP window.
  3. Save the image with a clear name, for example:
    RDP_TerminalServer_YourName.png

This screenshot must clearly show the Terminal Server name.

Part 4 – Attach Files to Your EMDS Case

Step 6 – Upload the Screenshots

  1. Open your EMDS case in the EMDS portal.
  2. Use the Attach File / Add Attachment option.
  3. Attach both screenshots:
    • The color tag screenshot from the session selection screen.
    • The Terminal Server screenshot from inside the remote session.
  4. Save or update the case so the support team can review the attachments.

These steps provide support with both your hosting group (color tag) and the exact Terminal Server you were on at the time.
